Putting together the base system is harder than I thought.

When I began this project for the IGMC, I thought I'd be able to make enough to show something.  That has long since turned out to not to be the case.  I cannot put gameplay on display.  I cannot show the beginnings of a progressing story.  What I can show is my graphics, Sooz's character portraits, a mostly functioning health UI.  Actually entirely functioning.  It just requires some minor touch up, such as the ability to die or the ability to pass out from exhaustion, or to start fumbling stuff and messing things things up when sanity gets low; stuff that isn't really important to displaying the system.  Considering you need to have something to do in order for any of that to matter, I'm not concerned with death animations, game over screens, or the consequences of failing to get a good night's sleep.  The debug log shows me that the system knows when the health bar reaches zero.  That will suffice for now.  I'm not going to be able to show gameplay, so I see no reason to worry about those types of mechanics.  I can show a working health system, and somewhat demonstrate the game's intent.

What I can show:

  • Functioning Health UI.
  • Functioning command UI.
  • The appearance and visual style of the game.
  • A relative plot outline and synopsis of the story.
  • Replenishing health and how it's achieved via the food station and ship bunks.

I don't know if this will suffice for the IGMC judges, but I certainly hope it will.  And who knows, with six and half days left, I can hopefully show them more than this when the time to submit arrives.
